The Oriental Republic of Uruguay (so called because of its location on the east bank of the Uruguay river) is situated on the Atlantic coast of South America between Argentina and Brazil. This South American country has an area of 68,536 sq. miles (176,220 sq Km)
and a population of around 3 million. The Capital is Montevideo. Uruguay chief economic assets exported are meat, wool, hides & skins.

Urugray was discovered in 1516 by Juan Diaz de Solis,a Spaniard but settled by the Portuguese who founded Colonia in 1680.
Spain contested Portuguese possession and in 1778 regained control.

Durring the general South American struggle for independance Uruguay's first attempt was lead by Gaucho soider Jose Gervasio Artigus leading the Banda Oriental which was quelled by Spanish and Portuguese forces in 1811. The armistice was soon broken and Argentine forces from Buenos Aries cast off Spanish bondin the Plataregion in 1814, only to be reconquered by the Portugese from Brazil in the struggie of 1816-20. Rervolt flared anew in 1825 and independence was reasserted in 1828 with the help of Argentina.

The Uruguayan Republic was established in 1830. Thus the mintage of this coin to mark the 100 years of independence! As Uruguay had no mint of its own its coinage was minted in the following Paris , Berlin, Vienna, Lyon France, Birmingham, Mexico City, Poissy France, Santiago and Utrecht.
