Born in Germany on May 10, 1828, Jacob Rech began his career as a blacksmith, starting out as an apprentice when he was just a boy. At the age of 15, Rech found his way to the United States, and settled in Philadelphia. Like many blacksmiths of his day, Rech's craft evolved into carriage and wagon making.

Having honed his expertise and adequately perfected his craft, Rech opened his own wagon and carriage manufactory in 1849.

Those on the east coast enjoyed a long 2011 summer with innumerable days of sunshine. As September began, and most days thereafter, the Fall season has been equally an innumerable span of rainy days.

William H. Richardson was an umbrella, parasol, and sunshade manufacturer and retailer in Philadelphia during the middle 19th century.

During this era, parasols and sunshades were quite popular, and used by ladies to shield themselves from the rays of the sun. Though unsuitable for use in rain due to the materials used for their construction, their counterparts, umbrellas, like today, were used to shield pedestrians from inclement weather.

During the 1920's most of the strawberry growers located in and around Sarcoxie, Missouri participated in a farming cooperative. Like today's orange growers, the purpose of the cooperative was to pool and leverage the resources of all the growers who were located in close geographic proximity. This particular cooperative was known as the Sarcoxie Horticultural Association, and in its heyday, it consisted of more than 200 member growers. As an operational strategy of the collective, the member growers established a financial arrangement with one of the town's banks; The Bank of Sarcoxie. Pursuant to that arrangement, the bank conceived and issued a special set of picker checks, consisting of three separate denominations that varied in size and amount. The first picker check, about the size of a nickel, represented a quart of strawberries harvested. The second, about the size of a quarter, represented a tray of strawberries harvested. And the third, about the size of a Peace Dollar, represented a crate of strawberries harvested.

Critical to the success in the early 20th century southern textile industry were the mill villages. Like coal camps and mining towns that supported their respective industries, mill villages supported textile and cotton mills, and consisted of company-provided worker homes, schools, a church, and of course, the company stores. And like the coal camps, mill villages were a way that companies could exert a watchful eye over their workers, as well as indirectly manage their lives during non-working hours. ...

Among the various Pre-Federal copper coinages, the Nova Constellatio varieties are some of the most popularly encountered and frequently collected. Although numerous texts have been written that illustrate the known 12 varieties, unfortunately no simple attribution guide has been encountered to date that succinctly and quickly provides collectors with a simple way to attribute. The below guide provides this.

Overall, the design of the coppers are modeled after the Nova Constellatio pattern series; all
